My book, ANGELBOUND, tells the story of a part demon girl who falls in love with a part angel prince. If you aren’t familiar with the book, there’s a quick trailer right here. In any case, I’m now doing an author tour to celebrate the launch of ANGELBOUND as an audiobook on Audible and iTunes, and I’ve been asked to share the best writing advice I ever got…And how I used it to get me where I am today.

It’s a super-interesting question.

For the sake of this post, I’m going to say that where I am today is having narrated and recorded the audiobook version of ANGELBOUND… And that journey started when I was a kid and got some virtual writing advice from the golden age of radio.

Here’s what happened. I grew up in the 1980’s, when there were still a lot of cassette tapes (yes, cassette tapes!) around with recordings of old radio shows. I loved listening to Orson Welles’s stuff, in particular The Shadow series and his classic version of War of the Worlds. These recordings were radio plays with sound effects and all that good stuff. I never forgot them.

In fact, my interest in audio production went on through my college days at Syracuse University, where I got degrees in both English as well as Television, Radio and Film Production. My senior thesis was in (you guessed it!) audio production, and I studied under the guy who did all the audio recordings for Mel Blanc, which was a total Bugs Bunny geek bonus!

Long story short, recording ANGELBOUND started way before I ever got into a studio. In fact, it began when I wrote the book while saying each word out loud, radio style. That meant every character had a particular voice from the get-go, which made recording the book a lot easier when the time came. Here’s a pic of me in studio:

In case you’re curious, I made a little video of myself doing the different voices, so you can get a feel for what it’s like to be with me in the studio. I also uploaded a sample of the final book here.

Today, it’s a thrill to share my own “radio play” with readers and listeners. In case you have other questions about my process, I’m always up for reader interaction, and more information on how to contact me is listed below.

*Now an audio book!*

Eighteen-year-old Myla Lewis is a girl who loves two things: kicking ass and kicking ass. She’s not your everyday quasi-demon, half-demon, and half-human, girl. For the past five years, Myla has lived for the days she gets to fight in Purgatory’s arena. When souls want a trial by combat for their right to enter heaven or hell, they go up against her, and she has not lost a battle yet.

But as she starts her senior year at Purgatory High, the arena fights are not enough to keep her spirits up anymore. When the demons start to act weird, even for demons, and the King of the Demons, Armageddon, shows up at Myla’s school, she knows that things are changing and it is not looking good for the quasi-demons. Myla starts to question everything, and does not like the answers she finds. What happened 17 years ago that turned the quasi-demons into slave labor? Why was her mom always so sad? And why won’t anyone tell her who her father is?

Things heat up when Myla meets Lincoln, the High Prince of the Thrax, a super sexy half-human and half-angel demon hunter. But what does a quasi-demon girl to do when she falls for a demon hunter? It’s a good thing that Myla is not afraid of breaking a few rules. With a love worth fighting for, Myla is going to shake up Purgatory.
