When Gavril placed the vegetables in the skillet, a welcome sizzle met Bex’s ears. A moment later the smell inspired her stomach into an audible groan. She hugged her torso and focused on the refreshing conversation to quell the rumbles. “Have you heard of the Stewardry making a mistake before? Of giving incorrect homestead coordinates?”
Stirring the cooking food, Gavril shook his head. He split the vegetables evenly between two bowls and handed one to Bex. “Perhaps it has happened before. If it happened on an unsuccessful site, how would anyone know? The homestead would fail and the pioneer would be erased from history. I’m grateful that’s not the case for you. Maybe your new orders will be nearby, and we’ll be neighbors.” The module on Gavril’s neck didn’t glow or blink. He must have shut it off.
Bex worried what the Stewardry would do about his seditious thoughts and didn’t want it hearing hers. She clicked off her module too. “I’d enjoy meeting with you now and then to talk. I didn’t expect to be so lonely with my Coda.”
“I didn’t either. It’s quite the surprise, isn’t it? It’s more surprising the Stewardry would send you to me.”
“Do you think it was on purpose? Meeting without permission is against the bylaws. I don’t want to be reset.”
She knew of reset from her mother, whose brother had undergone the procedure. Once recalled to the Stewardry Center, a citizen would have his or her thinking corrected to the basic morals that kept the world going. Her mother had said her brother remembered nothing of his life before the reset, as if he’d been erased or hadn’t existed until his thoughts had been turned right again. Losing one’s history was bad enough, yet the biggest danger was the fact most citizens didn’t survive.
Gavril shoved a morsel through his mask, then the hole closed up again. His cheeks churned as he chewed. “I’ve never heard of the Stewardry making mistakes. This very well could be part of their plan. You’ve noted the visibly cleaner air in the area? The Stewardry may want to build on my success.”
“Your success?” Bex rolled her eyes. “No one else played any part in the improvement?”
He shrugged, not appearing the least apologetic. “Of course those around me and those who came before contributed. Yet you must admit I’ve made great strides at getting this homestead going. Only two years and I’m already building my second dome.”
The salty, fatty, smoky bacamatoes melted like delight in Bex’s mouth. She hoped the Stewardry had provided her with bacamato seeds and they’d grow to harvest on her homestead. “I need not admit anything I know so little about.”
